Alberta is preparing to become the second Canadian province to regulate online casino gambling, following the model introduced in Ontario. Some players may assume that additional rules will make the experience more restrictive, but regulation is designed to do the opposite. A licensed market gives players stronger protections, clearer standards, and a safer environment overall.
The AGLC has confirmed that Alberta’s regulated online gambling market will launch on July 13th 2026. The announcement was made in April 2026, which is when operators were first allowed to submit their licence applications. In principle, all unregulated offshore casinos will be expected to stop serving Alberta players by this date unless they secure an Alberta licence.
The AGLC has also said that operators may be granted an extension of up to three months, allowing them until October 13th 2026, but only if they can demonstrate a clear path toward meeting all regulatory requirements. Extensions will be assessed individually and will not be granted automatically.
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission is the provincial agency responsible for regulating gambling, liquor and cannabis. Its role is to ensure safe and responsible participation across these industries.
In the gambling sector, the AGLC already oversees land‑based casinos, bingo halls, racing facilities and charitable gaming. From July 2026 onward, it will also regulate all online casinos operating in Alberta. Only operators that meet the AGLC’s standards for player protection, security and social responsibility will be approved.
From July 13th, offshore casinos licensed in jurisdictions such as Curaçao are expected to stop accepting Alberta players unless they obtain an Alberta licence. Some may receive temporary extensions, but this is not guaranteed.
Players will be able to register, deposit, withdraw and claim promotions at licensed Alberta‑approved casinos from the launch date. A strong selection of operators is expected to go live on or before this date, many offering welcome bonuses such as matched deposits, free spins and cashback.
Licensed sites will also be required to implement strict safety measures, including responsible gambling tools and a province‑wide self‑exclusion system.
At the moment, Play Alberta is the only regulated online casino in the province. That will change quickly once the market opens.

All licensed Alberta online casinos will be required to integrate with the province’s centralized self‑exclusion system. This digital platform allows players to exclude themselves from every regulated site for periods ranging from six months to three years.
Operators must also provide activity statements and responsible gambling tools such as deposit limits, loss limits and time reminders. Additional support is available through the AGLC’s GameSense program, which offers resources and guidance for safer play.
